Barcelona-based Sketchpad’s debut EP blurs the lines between ambient, glitch and sound design. Drawing upon their sound design and audio installation work, the mysterious Sketchpad have clearly mastered the art of creating atmospheres with the minimal use of sonic elements. Warm analog drones blend with off-kilter crunchy rhythms and lo-fi electronics to create a collection of tracks that could have been recorded any time in the last 50 years.
Their debut EP, ‘Six Random Years’, is a six tracks of claustrophobic sounds and atmospheres which lands somewhere between the sonic explorations of electronic music pioneer Morton Subotnick and the haunting textures of David Lynch’s original sound designer, Alan Splet. The second EP ‘It’s Can’t Happen Here’, is a slightly warmer sound, blending acoustic instruments such as pianos with their traditional sound design elements.
